African art at the cloister

African-art-at-the-clo...

There is a lot more that funny shaped baguettes in Le Marais ;-) There is also a lot of art. Hence this African art exhibition in Le Cloître des Billettes (the Billettes cloister) - a sublime place built around 1430 ! - I love African art so I'm a little biased of course, but I'm sure you will all agree that these sculptures are positively stunning. I wish I had won the lottery and could afford to buy them... See the little video here if you want to know more about this exhibition and about Marie B who made them.

paul loebach: great camp collection

paul-loebach-great-cam...

image: paul loebach

the great camp collection is a new series of wood furniture by american designer paul loebach. the series was
inspired by adirondack furniture that grew in popularity since people began visiting the area in upstate new york
for leisure.  loeback explains, ‘in the mid-to-late 1800’s, affluent city-dwellers built elaborate country cabins in
the adirondack wilderness known as ‘great camps’, and rustic high-society was born.’ local craftsman began
creating furniture for these homes, eventually reaching a more mainstream audience throughout america.
loebach’s collection re-interprets these designs using 4-axis cnc machining to create a rustic look.
the collection features a dresser, credenza, chair and coat rack. each one appears to be hand-made with spindly
legs and facades. the collection was designed for matter made.

It’s Amazing, Knoll’s Oval Table is the Reason

Its-Amazing-Knolls-Ova...

If you haven’t noticed, the sitcoms and films want us to believe there are only two shapes of conference table: blah rectangles (think ‘Office Space’) or gigantic, over-the-top monstrosities (think the Mode office of ‘Ugly Betty’). It makes wanting a funky table seem daunting, since all we see are false examples of how useful a large meeting table can actually be.
Thankfully - for the sake of maintaing sanity - Knoll has pioneered the way for decades now. It’s almost as if the Oval Table Desk by Florence Knoll says what Kanye West wrote in his song back in 2008, “It’s amazing, I’m the reason” about it’s effect on any space. After all, the table won the Design Center Stuttgart Award back in 1969-1970, and has maintained its steady resurgence as a quiet warrior for the art of clean lines and vibrant color.
Florence Knoll Table Desk. Designed by Florence Knoll for KnollStudio.

Florence made the oval-shaped table in two different sizes: 78” W x 47 3/4” D x 28” H or in the larger 96” W x 54” D x 28” H. As a person who studied everything design-related, from architecture to interiors to advertising, this lady knew from the start what was important to an object within a space. For this reason, the table comes in a smaller Round Table Desk measuring 54” W x 28” H.
Choices: even though it’s a top of the line piece of furniture, you can choose between three laminate tops (1.5” thick), veneer (1.18”), and marble (3/4”). Additionally, the marble is coated with a transparent polyester that preserves its eye-catching first impression. Underneath whichever table top you decide upon there is a single, heavy gauge welded steel post that distributes the weight evenly between its four legs in either a polished or satin chrome finish. Although a base might seem less like a design feature, the shiny chrome platform beneath complements the Oval Table Desk’s desire to remain simple and perfect, with no worry of banging knees on multiple posts.

The Oval Table Desk surfaces come finished in white laminate, natural oak, pearwood, medium brown, mahogony, medium red mahograny, ebonized oak veneer, or five choices of marble. With the wide variety of colors, sizes, and materials available makes a designer out of each person who decides to invest in the original designer, Florence Knoll, who famously studied alongside Eero Saarinen, Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer and Wallace K. Harrison before creating her company (and this table).

Scion tC “Take On the Machine” Augmented Reality Game

Scion-tC-Take-On-the-M...

Along with Scion, ATTIK recently launched the campaign’s “Take On the Machine” Augmented Reality Game at www.TakeOntheMachine.com (look for the “Augmented Reality” tab at the top), where for the very first time in a commercial game, an AR marker is used as the steering wheel to drive a car. A Spectacular print ad is appearing in the September issues of Inked, Giant Robot, Juxtapoz, XLR8R, Dsport, Modified and a few other magazines, where the ads feature a removable AR marker. Here are links to 72dpi versions of that ad, and the marker you can print out to play along: see more via on82.blogspot.com

norster 600r

norster-600r

the norster 600r is a finnish designed mid engine car that has a compact size that actually puts it into the category of
a heavy quad. the car is a throwback to old english cars such as austin-healey’s sprite. the unique styling is perhaps
one of the car’s most unusual features, especially with the vertical opening doors. the car has a 580cc two-cylinder
engine with only 20 horsepower and 36.8 pound-feet of torque. while this limits the car’s driving at high speeds,
it allows the engine to achieve around 50 miles to one gallon of gas.

MIT seaswarm

MIT-seaswarm

the deepwater horizon oil spill in the gulf of mexico is said to have leaked 4.9 million barrels of crude oil. while the leak
is now capped, the clean-up is still occurring. researchers in MIT’s senseable city project developed seaswarm,
an autonomous network of solar-powered oil cleaning robots to handle situations just like this. the small floating devices,
skim the water’s surface, collecting oil on a conveyor belt made of a thin nanowire mesh. this patented nanomaterial can
absorb up to 20 times its weight in oil. the oil is then digested onboard the seaswarm so that the robot can be continually
collecting. the devices communicate with each other through GPS and wifi tackling an oil spill from the edge and working
inwards. their small size allows them to reach areas where other oil collectors cannot navigate.
