The Robert Louis Stevenson Door

The-Robert-Louis-Steve...

Did you know that Oxgangs Primary School has a very special door on display in the dining room which carries the signature of famous Edinburgh author Robert Louis Stevenson? This door was donated to the school in 1958 and we brought it with us to our new building in 2001.
This is the story of how RLS came to sign the door (with thanks to Jeremy Hodges for the information)
In the summer of 1870, Robert Louis Stevenson or ‘Louis’ as everyone called him (pronounced ‘Lewis’ of course) was 19 and living at Swanston Cottage, his parents’ summer residence. When they went away on holiday he was left to his own devices, with Alison Cunningham, his old nurse, acting as housekeeper. He amused himself by playing the country squire, paying calls around the local farms and inviting several young farmers back to dine at Swanston Cottage, including Charles Macara, 24-year-old master of 772 acres, who lived a short stroll away at Swanston House; a farmer called Watson from Dreghorn Mains and George Scott, the 26-year-old tenant of Oxgangs Farm.
Louis returned the social call to George Scott at Oxgangs, where they sat in the garden and young Stevenson of Swanston composed a poem. Not far from the farmhouse was the Hunters’ Tryst, an ancient inn where the young squires liked to meet. It had once been the headquarters of the Six-Feet-High Club, a convivial band of lofty individuals including Sir Walter Scott.
That Louis lacked the stature to be counted among this heroic band of yore was recorded on a door at Oxgangs farmhouse, where George Scott took his measure and Louis confirmed the mark in his own handwriting: ‘R.L. Stevenson, June 1870. Stocking soles.’ His height then was five feet, eight and three-quarter inches. It must have been an amusing Scott family custom that visitors were invited to record their heights on the door, which would explain all the signatures. Louis would have been just one of them and so, by chance, the school now has a famous autograph.

P1 Fairyland Project

P1-Fairyland-Project

On Thursday 17th June P1 parents were invited into school to see what the pupils had been doing with their “Fairyland” project and to join in with some of the activities. Thank you to everyone who came to the event; the children really loved showing you what they have been doing.
Here are a few photographs and some feedback from parents using the “2 stars and a wish” format:
What my child enjoyed-

“showing me around and making gingerbread men”
“the whole thing! But especially the arts and crafts projects and the video diary”
“the gingerbread man- and loved eating it”
“showing us what he has been doing”
“the biscuit making and writing a letter to the dragon”
“the friendly dragon, making a castle and learning fairytales”
“everything”

I liked-

“helping with the activities and the relaxed atmosphere”
“the variety of homework and coming into the classroom to see them in that environment”
“the storyline approach and the way the dragon left notes for the children- my daughter totally believed it!”
“seeing Fairyland after hearing so much about it”
“the creativity and being involved in the learning”
“how much effort all of the children and the teachers put in to this event”
“the fairy biscuits”
“the entire event was good, and it was nice to see the classroom and the children’s work”
“to see so many happy children”

I wish-

“we could have more afternoons like this one”
“I could be a fly on the wall at school”
“that you continue with this type of idea in P2 as it has really fired my daughter’s imagination”
“to have one of these again”
“the teachers had done things like this when I was at school!”
“I had more information about what the topic is and what the learning outcomes are”
“there wasn’t so much glitter”
“fairyland was real”
“that there had been a bit more ‘direction’ as it got very crowded around certain areas”
“it was a bit less chaotic at food and drink bits”
