T-Mobile G2 comes out from hiding, pre-orders being later this month

T-Mobile-G2-comes-out-...

At last, T-Mobile just went official with its G2 QWERTY slider. As expected, this Android 2.2 device ships with Qualcomm's MSM7230 "Snapdragon" silicon optimized for T-Mobile's HSPA+ network and featuring an 800MHz CPU and second generation application co-processor. Other specs include a 3.7-inch "screen," 4GB of internal memory with pre-installed 8GB microSD card (supporting up to 32GB cards), Swype keyboard, a 3.5-mm headphone jack, and 5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash and 720p HD video capabilities. Look for this successor of the T-Mobile G1 to go up for pre-orders sometime later this month.Continue reading T-Mobile G2 comes out from hiding, pre-orders being later this monthT-Mobile G2 comes out from hiding, pre-orders being later this month originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 09 Sep 2010 00:50:00 EST. BlackBerry App World crosses the 10,000 app mark

BlackBerry-App-World-c...

It's been over a year since it hit 2,000 apps, but it looks like BlackBerry App World has finally hit its biggest milestone yet -- RIM has announced via Twitter that it's now "10,000 apps strong and growing." For those keeping track, that still leaves it well behind Apple's App Store and the Android Market, which by some estimates boast roughly 250,000 and 70,000 to 100,000 apps, respectively, and each of which also took less time to hit the 10,000 app mark. Even still, the fact that a smartphone platform "only" has 10,000 apps speaks quite a bit to how far we've come in just a few short years.BlackBerry App World crosses the 10,000 app mark originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 08 Sep 2010 22:53:00 EST. White HTC Desire and silver Wildfire make a special appearance in London

White-HTC-Desire-and-s...

Man, just look at these puppies -- a silver Wildfire nestling against a snow-white Desire. If this cute image is making you smile, you can thank our friends over at Android Community for stumbling upon these special edition HTC phones, which are headed to The Carphone Warehouse's exclusive club in good old Blighty (sorry, US readers). There's no date confirmed just yet, but given that these Android phones will be slapped with the regular price tags, you'd best be ready to dash to your nearest store before it's too late. Head over to the source link for more eye candy while you camp out.White HTC Desire and silver Wildfire make a special appearance in London originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 08 Sep 2010 21:03:00 EST. Rogers gets real with Android 2.1 updates for HTC Magic+, Samsung Galaxy Spica

Rogers-gets-real-with-...

As promised, Rogers is now delivering an over-the-air update to Android 2.1 for customers of its HTC Magic+ alongside the Samsung Galaxy Spica, though we wouldn't exactly throw 'em a party for the occasion: internationally, of course, the Spica got its 2.1 update way back in March. Furthermore, though the Magic+'s update is OTA as we'd mentioned, the Spica's update process is a little more complex: you need to have access to a Windows machine and be willing to download a binary and cable up to get the job done. All in the name of keeping your beloved handset within earshot of Froyo, right?Rogers gets real with Android 2.1 updates for HTC Magic+, Samsung Galaxy Spica originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 08 Sep 2010 18:20:00 EST. Mobilicity takes Rogers to task over Chatr, alleges it's using a 'flanker brand'

Mobilicity-takes-Roger...

At a glance, it seems like upstart Canadian value carrier Mobilicity has a fairly cut-and-dried case against Rogers here, alleging in a complaint to the government's Competition Bureau that the big guy is in direct violation of Section 78 of the country's Competition Act that prevents established companies from creating so-called "flanker brands" offering lower prices to kill off new players. In other words, it's saying Rogers' new Chatr sub-brand only exists to make life difficult for the likes of Mobilcity, WIND Mobile, and Public Mobile -- and considering the uncanny timing of Chatr's creation, Rogers is probably going to have a tough time explaining that one away. Thing is, various sources inside the regulatory bodies at play are apparently telling The Globe and Mail that the complaint could literally take years to make its way through the system -- a typical bureaucratic nightmare -- so even if Rogers is in the wrong here, it might not have any material effect on Mobilicity's short-term prospects. For that, it'll take good, old-fashioned subscriber conquests and efficient management, we suppose.Mobilicity takes Rogers to task over Chatr, alleges it's using a 'flanker brand' originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 08 Sep 2010 16:48:00 EST. Google Instant on a Motorola Droid 2, hands-on

Google-Instant-on-a-Mo...

Google's new hotness is likely invading your desktop web search right now, but what's Instant search like on a smartphone? We got a good look at a Verizon-based Droid 2 running a prototype version of the auto-complete engine on both WiFi and 3G, and we're happy to say it's just about the same -- assuming you've got a decent connection and a reasonable amount of screen real estate. As you can see immediately above, you're only getting three Instant results under the search box here, as opposed to the desktop version's five, and between Android's notifications bar and the native keyboard auto-complete bar, you can only see a single result without scrolling down -- and honestly, this isn't going to be all that useful at a glance if you're relying on a screen-sucking virtual keyboard.

The system was speedy enough, however, pulling down not only text queries but also Google Image thumbnails as well, and worked about as quickly as a standard mobile Google run without having to hit a button to complete our search. (The prototype did stop working and had to be restarted when we lost our 3G bars. ) A Google product manager told us it should work in any AJAX-capable mobile browser, and is presently in testing on Android and iPhone, with BlackBerry in consideration given the more-capable OS 6 browser. Expect to see it hit smartphones near you this fall.Continue reading Google Instant on a Motorola Droid 2, hands-onGoogle Instant on a Motorola Droid 2, hands-on originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 08 Sep 2010 15:11:00 EST. QuickPay announces ROAMpay credit card swiper for Android, BlackBerry, iOS

QuickPay-announces-ROA...

We've seen our fair share iPhone-based credit card payment systems, but we both know that those aren't the only handsets people do business with. ROAMpay from QuickPay Merchant Services is a device agnostic card swiper with apps available for iOS, Android, and BlackBerry. Actually, it seems to be a virtual cash register as well, letting you log cash transactions (and generate receipts for 'em) as well as offering real-time authorization for Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express (as long as you have a QuickPay account, of course). Ready to get into business? Hit up the source link. Otherwise, we have a fantastic video (and some pretty swell PR) for you after the break.Continue reading QuickPay announces ROAMpay credit card swiper for Android, BlackBerry, iOSQuickPay announces ROAMpay credit card swiper for Android, BlackBerry, iOS originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 08 Sep 2010 14:24:00 EST. T-Mobile throws in up to three extra lines for free on family plans

T-Mobile-throws-in-up-...

It doesn't last forever, but T-Mobile's throwing big families a bone for the moment with a deal that makes the third, fourth, and fifth lines free on family plans (typically, only the first and second are offered at no additional charge). They're only free through 2012, but that gives you well over a year of cost-free bliss for your tykes' BlackBerrys; 200 minutes are included with each additional line and you can pay to upgrade them to unlimited if you're a "cool" parent. You are a cool parent, aren't you? Follow the break for T-Mobile's full press release.Continue reading T-Mobile throws in up to three extra lines for free on family plansT-Mobile throws in up to three extra lines for free on family plans originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 08 Sep 2010 14:31:00 EST. iOS 4.1 is live, available to download right now

iOS-41-is-live-availab...

If you can just put down Angry Birds for one minute and plug your iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch 2nd generation, iPod touch 3rd generation, or iPod touch 4th generation into iTunes, you should be in for a pleasant non-surprise: iOS 4.1 is finally out and ready for your consumption. It's not a huge update, but Game Center is an exciting addition (for the few, proud devices that are getting it), and we're sure your face will be happy to stop getting accused for iPhone 4 hang-ups with the long overdue proximity sensor fix (shots of the changelog are after the break). Let us know how 4.1 is treating you in comments below.Continue reading iOS 4.1 is live, available to download right nowiOS 4.1 is live, available to download right now originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 08 Sep 2010 13:09:00 EST. Samsung Galaxy S keeps up global offensive with three Chinese launches

Samsung-Galaxy-S-keeps...

Samsung's done an admirable job of pushing its Galaxy S line far and wide already, but when you enter the Chinese market -- a market with a billion wireless customers -- you're potentially taking things to a whole new level. Sammy has crafted HSPA, EV-DO, and TD-SCDMA versions of its high-end Android phone for China Unicom, China Telecom, and juggernaut China Mobile, respectively, all offering the same 4-inch Super AMOLED display seen elsewhere around the world. The Telecom model launches first -- this month, in fact -- but all three versions will be available before the end of the year. Follow the break for the full press release.

Qualcomm: 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon devices to arrive at end of 2011, 1.2GHz in Q1

Qualcomm-15GHz-dual-co...

Bad news: Qualcomm's just informed us that while it's still on track to ship the juicy 1.5GHz dual-core QSD8672 Snapdragon in Q4 this year, the end-user devices aren't expected to hit the market until the end of 2011 -- potentially almost a whole year later than its previous "early next year" or "by Christmas" prediction. What a shame. On a slightly more positive beat, though, the lesser 1.2GHz dual-core MSM8x60 chipset should be heading towards consumers early next year. Alas, this won't change the fact that we'll still need something to fill the void until next year -- Windows Phone 7, we're looking at you.Qualcomm: 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon devices to arrive at end of 2011, 1.2GHz in Q1 originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 08 Sep 2010 12:10:00 EST.
