The Stowaway Bathtub Breaks The Mold

The-Stowaway-Bathtub-B...

When it comes to reinventing the wheel — or bathtub — there's only so much you can do. Sure you can make it light up like a dance party or add soothing jets, but all any homeowner really wants is a clean and tidy space where all their essentials are at hand. The Stowaway tub aims to do just that and look fairly decent along the away. Read Full Post

Nike files patent for auto-lacing sneakers, Marty McFly doth protest

Nike-files-patent-for-...

We've seen some extremely DIY auto-lacing sneakers, but it looks like the big boys -- Nike -- have thought about getting in on the game as well. Patent filings which occurred in early through late 2009 show off an automatic lacing system that is pretty reminiscent of Marty McFly's invention in Back to the Future, and we can tell you that from the looks of it, it's a future we'd definitely like to inhabit. The shoes appear to boast a charging system and lights in addition to the lacing component, and while so few patent apps ever lead to a real retail product, we're really rooting for this one. SixthSense navigation device takes gestures for control

SixthSense-navigation-...

Conceived by Benjamin Peterson, a senior pursuing B.S Industrial Design & Minor in Sustainable Design at Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA, the “SixthSense” is a navigation device that incorporates Pranav Mistry’s SixthSense gestural recognition technology and components to navigate the foreign travelers safely to their destination. Hanging like a pendent in front of the user, the travel companion device also includes a projector, camera and CPU to make your traveling comfortable and memorable. The SixthSense comes with a built-in a battery, possibly rechargeable, to get the device going anytime anywhere.

MakerBot Wristwatch Enclosure

MakerBot-Wristwatch-En...

Open-source fabrication advocate and 2010 TED Fellow Dominic Muren just sent word of his latest project: an enclosure for a MakerBot Wristwatch called Makerwatch SSG. (Thanks, Dominic!)

The SSG design framework, developed by Dominic at the Humblefactory, breaks an object down into different functional layers -- skin, skeleton, and guts. The exciting thing about this separation is how it makes the process of making derivative objects, or entirely new remixes much easier. All you need to know to make a new SSG watch is how to sew, and where to buy some fly fabric. The skin gives most of the style, and some of the function (clasps, pockets, pen-loops -- you decide!)

Tocky / Rolling Alarm Clock

Tocky-Rolling-Alarm-Clock

You may have seen or even own Clocky, Guari Nanda's first rolling alarm clock that runs from you in random directions to get you out of bed. Now, 4 years later, at the New York International Gift Fair, she's released Clocky's updated little brother, Tocky. This one is all 2010: it's spherical, has a touch screen and changeable skins, records messages and mp3s with its built in mic, and can be driven around with your iPhone (just kidding about that last one).

The product is hot off the presses, but Nanda has already released some how-to videos that demonstrate some of it's cutest features, seen below. It's available for wholesale at the NYIGF booth 4112, ending tomorrow, or, for regular consumers, from her online store.
