One Pot, Two Lives

One-Pot-Two-Lives

No drugs! Only fishes and plants. Not weed! Thought I bet it’d be extra cool if-no! This is a planter and a fishtank. You put your regularly potted plant in this pot on top, and a goldfish on the bottom. What could they provide for eachother, you might ask? Waste! Yes, the fishes turn their eaten bait remnants into nutrients for the plant, while the water fed to the plant is filtered as it passes though and becomes clean for the fish. It is a totally natural and lovely system.
Let us discuss something – the size. Do you think this tank is too small? I’ve got a bit of a concern for that little fishy, but what are your standards for a gold?
Using this system of cycling materials keeps the fish poo from staying in the water long enough to turn it acidic. It also can reduce the use of chemical substance such as nitrifying bacteria and other materials, “maintaining the steady neutral PH quality of the water.”
Benefits!
The soil remains humid, extending the watering period by about one week.
The product’s middle layer is the filter layer, which accumulates fertilizer as the nutrient for outdoor pot plant.
So… I’m also adding this to my gift list.

It's a Bird! It's a Plane! It's...an Infographic?

Its-a-Bird-Its-a-Plane...

South African airline Kulula launches a new fleet of conveniently labeled jets.Ah, the power of branding. While Boeing plays around with carbon fiber, South African airline Kulula--unknown to me before this--slaps a new decal on its fleet and becomes the talk of the blogosphere. With the help of local branding agency Atmosphere, Kulula launched this new look, called Flying 101. It's more proof of the ubiquitous cool of infographics, I guess--everyone loves a good labeled diagram. And what a way to stand out on the tarmac, amidst South African Airways plain-Jane fleet: white, serifed type, and the most predictable logo possible, the South African flag. It's a huge step up from Kulula's past designs (right, top), which made it look more like a late-90s build-your-own-website. They had a cool color, but that was it. In their efforts to get hip, Kulula has done some wacky things, like this creepy (but funny? I'm not sure) "news" show. Their new look is tame in comparison, but I'd say just as effective. Did anyone else always think the black box was in the front?[via SwissMiss]

Obama’s Budget Proposal and Incorrect Forecasts

Obamas-Budget-Proposal...

President Obama announced his 2011 budget proposal. How does it compare to last year's budget? Shan Carter and Amanda Cox of The New York Times compare the two plans. Red indicates a decrease in the percentage of the budget dedicated to the respective area, and green is for growth. Zoom in for a better view of the smaller areas.
Big decreases for Medicaid grants, veteran benefits, and unemployment insurance. Major increase for education, Medicare, and administration of justice.
This of course takes budget forecasting into account, which Ms. Cox shows isn't all that accurate sometimes.

Air Alien Green Helicopter Uses Electric Energy for Pleasant Commuting

Air-Alien-Green-Helico...

The air alien ship is a green helicopter concept that offers a range of flying opportunities by comprising a large electric motor and a stator with two large electromagnetic rings. The Two giant fuel tanks filled with hydrogen and oxygen are laid under the floor that generates the required electricity. The concept integrates two propellers with permanent magnetic wings running in the opposite direction independently and contains a detachable ring that provides stability. With its magnetic levitation, the propellers produce very little noise to ensure an ideal safari or panorama flight.
The complete operation of the helicopter is controlled through the computer. When the helicopter is lifted above the ground, the four feet takes the position for flying and works as leg flaps and when landing, the feet acts as landing gears. The angle of legs are the key factor for generating speed and to turn left or right, the pilot accelerates one of the two propellers. Most f the elements are made of carbon fiber which helps keeping the helicopter incredibly lightweight.
